Diabetes in Sri Lanka

Local figures show an increase in the prevalence of diabetes mellitus. The first study on a rural population, conducted in 1990, discovered a prevalence of 2.5%. The largest study ever conducted on the incidence of diabetes in Sri Lanka was released in 2005. Previously believed to be a disease of the wealthy, diabetes mellitus is now a global pandemic, with two-thirds of those who have it residing in developing nations. The prevalence of men was 14.2%, compared to the prevalence of women, which was 13.5%.
