The Certificate Course In Evidence Based
Diabetes Management

Previously thought of as a disease of the developed world, diabetes mellitus is now a global epidemic, with two-thirds of those who have it living in poor nations. With a population of 22 million, Sri Lanka is currently a low-income nation in Asia. Over the past several decades, the country has experienced rapid and unplanned urbanization, with an estimated 30% of the population now residing in urban and suburban regions. Studies conducted locally indicate a considerable rise in the prevalence of diabetes mellitus. Over the past three decades, there has been an exponential increase in the prevalence of diabetes and prediabetes in urban areas. A major policy and health planning problem is the pool of diabetic patients who are now being treated and who are susceptible to the emergence of severe morbidity over time. Numerous people who have prediabetes and are at risk of developing diabetes should trigger urgent national initiatives as well as tailored interventions like nutrition and exercise counseling. We have previously discussed potential public health measures that may be taken in South Asia to reduce non-communicable diseases like diabetes. The aforesaid high risk groups in the urban population may require more attention from these interventions in light of the current findings.

The majority of diabetes patients in Sri Lanka are managed by primary care doctors, thus they must be driven, interested in, and knowledgeable about this metabolic condition. The Primary Care Diabetic Group Sri Lanka (PCDG), which is made up of senior primary care doctors with a shared interest in Diabetes Mellitus, has enrolled in a certificate program in diabetes management as a result. With the most recent updates pertinent to primary care practitioners who are at the forefront of managing diabetes patients, PHFI in India (www.phfi.org) has created this powerful academic program called Certificate Course in Evidence-Based Diabetes Management (CCEBDM).
